Passenger numbers fall at Frankfurt

GERMAN airport operator Fraport AG said yesterday that its overall passenger numbers fell 1.7 percent in the year to September as the global economic crisis hurt demand, but reported an improvement in long-haul traffic.

The operator of Frankfurt Airport said 7 million passengers used its airports in September, down from 7.5 million in September 2008.

The company also owns or holds stakes in airports including Lima, Peru and Antalya, Turkey.

Frankfurt Airport saw a 4.7 percent reduction in passengers, declining to 4.6 million from 4.8 million in September 2008, Fraport said.

"The September passenger figures confirm our 2009 full-year forecast of only a 5 to 6 percent drop in passenger traffic at Frankfurt," said Stefan Schulte, the company's chief executive.
