Trash sorting’s ‘significant effect’
Garbage sorting has had a significant effect in Jiading. The average amount of dry garbage per day in the district dropped by 9 percent to 1,626 tons, while average wet garbage was 370 tons a day, nearly doubling the same period last year.
In the next stage, all parties should be pro-active in adopting improvements so as to carry out garbage sorting successfully, Zhou Jinlin, deputy Party secretary of Jiading District, said.
In Jiading there are 334 residential areas which accept garbage at a “designated time, designated place,” accounting for 42 percent of the total number of residential areas.
The district plans to expand this practice to 60 percent of residential areas by the end of September and to 80 percent by the end of the year.
Trials of this method of garbage sorting are being promoted citywide.
Residents can only dispose of trash at specific places and usually in two-hour periods in the morning and afternoon, though some residents complain that the times are too short for various reasons.
Jiading ranked 8th among 16 districts in Shanghai in garbage sorting between April and June, the city office responsible for household garbage-sorting promotion said last month.
Chongming, Changning and Xuhui districts had pristine performances in household waste sorting between April and June, while Jinshan, the Pudong New Area and Huangpu ranked bottom.
The assessments were based on the installation of garbage-sorting promotion, facilities, cleaners’ work and sorting efficiency.
