Shopping festival activities offer something for every consumer

The two-month Minhang Shopping Festival that began on April 30 is a panoply of activities and promotions certain to delight consumers.

The opening ceremony at The Hub in Hongqiao, designated as Minhang Brand Day, celebrated products made by over 180 Minhang-based companies.

Coupons and lottery draws are among the enticements promoting local products.

The ceremony also unveiled the district’s Top 10 popular landmarks, chosen from 60 candidates. Among the finalists were the Jinjiang Amusement Park, Qibao Old Street, The Hub and Lihpao Plaza, Pujiang Country Park and the Seoul Market.

A shopping map on the official app of Minhang Today gives residents information on specific shopping malls, stores and promotional offers. The shopping festival coincides with other holidays of the season, like Mother’s Day, Children’s Day, Father’s Day and the Dragon Boat Festival.

Jurisdictions in Minhang are presenting an array of special events.

In Wujing Town, the festival is reaching out to the broader Yangtze River Delta by promoting 100 specialty brands, including Longjing tea from Hangzhou and salted duck from Nanjing.

In Meilong Town, the beer brand Reeb, once so familiar to Shanghai residents, is reappearing in a new format. The original brewery has been turned into a beer “experience” center.

Coffee and wine will be the top features at the Hongqiao Import Commodity Exhibition and Trading Center until the end of the festival.

Zhuanqiao Town is featuring car sales and maintenance.

The Hongqiao Business District is a pilot area for using the central bank’s new e-yuan for purchases and services.

Qibao Town will be hosting night fairs.

Zhiye Plaza will promote snacks produced in Minhang, including the well-known brands of Perfetti Van Melle, Pocky, Master Kong and Pepsi, along with local specialties such as Maqiao dried bean curd and Zhuanqiao steamed cake.

Cultural activities dot the festival. At Laowaijie, or Foreigners’ Street, musical performances and themed fairs are scheduled. Menghuayuan in Pujiang Town will be offering plants for sale, both online and off, and invites visitors to gardening activities.

Meanwhile, the Xinzhuang Industrial Zone is holding a poetry reciting event, art exhibitions and a handicrafts fair.

Maqiao Town will showcase its strength in artificial intelligence technology with exhibits of services robots, including models capable of cleaning homes.

More information on activities is available on the district’s official app.

Last year, Minhang’s commodity sales hit 660 billion yuan (US$102.37 billion), ranking it among top districts in Shanghai’s consumer market.
