Yet another police raid on gambling den
THE war waged by the Shanghai Municipal Police on gambling dens within the International Settlement was continued yesterday evening when a Police party raided a flat in the Denis Apartments, at the corner of Bubbling Well and Carter Roads.
The police, it is believed, had watched the place for some time, having learned that some foreigners were secretly operating a roulette wheel on the premises. It was also learned that the den was well-known to the gambling community of Shanghai.
Two vans with detectives were seen outside the apartments yesterday, but when the police broke into the flat, all gambling devices had been removed. It was reported that the whole paraphernalia had been taken to another foreigner’s place in the western part of the French Concession.
The Police party surprised several foreigners and Chinese on the premises when they raided the den, and seized many documents, and statements of accounts, which, it is believed, are enough to convict the owners of the den.
The foreigner, conducting secret gambling in Denis Apartments, was reported to have removed the gambling devices just before the arrival of the police. It was believed that the stuff had been taken out by the rear of the house and taken to the French Concession in a truck.
