Helping others can be fun and rewarding

The Shanghai Baby’s Home CCA (co-curricular activities) is where we learn about using student action to support children in our community. Last term, students visited the Shanghai Baby’s Home to find out from direct experience what the needs of the children are. The children who live there are mostly aged 6 months to 5 years but occasionally children stay there until they are around 12 and 13. We discovered the Shanghai Baby’s Home needed to raise awareness to help the children find new families and also to raise funds for medical care.

After finding this out we decided to take advantage of a great offer from FoD (Friends of Dulwich) to have a Shanghai Baby’s Home stall at the Farmer’s Market on April 10.

We got together in our CCA time and thought of ideas that would get people’s attention and draw them to our stall. We all had a lot of great ideas so we decided to vote. Some of our ideas included squishies, slime, card-making, fun games and many more but the winning ideas were “Fancy Photo Booth” and “Guess the Name of the Panda.” The booth is where people can pay to dress up in crazy costumes against the backdrop of a city. We charged 15 yuan (US$2.2) for five photos. We got together at lunchtimes to get the job done, making the city, and emailing people to get help where needed. Making a rota so that we could all take a turn on the stall.

We were super proud to raise an amazing 1,165 yuan in only two and a half hours. We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone who helped us and congratulations to Raimundo from 4F who won “Guess the Name of the Panda.” We will be visiting the home to give them our donation.
