Classic Kunqu and Peking opera to be staged

THE full version of “The Prophetic Paintings,” a classic play that hasn’t been performed for more than 30 years, will be put on stage once again on September 18.

The play is a collaboration between 77-year-old Kunqu Opera master Cai Zhengren and Peking Opera artists Shi Yihong, Xi Zhonglu, Ke Jun and Hu Xuan.

Based on historical events, the play is about the rise and fall of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Three prophetic paintings reveal the secrets and destiny of the dynasty.

The play will feature spectacular scenery and martial arts scenes using swords and spears. Martial arts performer Xi Zhonglu, in his 60s, will present his own stunts.

Peking Opera artist Shi Yihong, who is also skilled in Kunqu Opera, will depict female assassin Fei Zhen’e.

The role was famously performed by Peking Opera master Mei Lanfang in the 1930s. After studying video materials, Shi will give her own interpretation of the classic role.
