Dances you have never seen before

NEARLY 30 dance troupes from 17 countries and regions will stage their contemporary works in Shanghai through Saturday, as part of the second “Dance Stages” festival.
The troupes include the Marco Flores Company from Spain, Java Dance Theater from New Zealand, Helen Simoneau Danse from the US, the Houying Dance Theater and the Hong Kong Dance Alliance from China.
They will perform at the Shanghai Magnolia Theater and public spaces at Shanghai Xintiandi and The HUB in Hongqiao in Changning District.
Eight of the programs will have their world premiere at the festival, while for 23 this will be their Chinese mainland premiere.
Helen Simoneau Danse will bring two world premiere works tonight at Shanghai Magnolia Theater — the solo “The Gentleness was in Her Hands” and the duo “Moonlight Parade.”
The solo weaves automated and doll-like movements. Like surrendering to a memory, the performer allows glimpses of vulnerability to be exposed before reverting back to numbness. Folding and twisting create a sense of ritual and inevitability. The duo features two female dancers — one muscular, the other a ballerina.
“Extrema,” to be premiered by Marco Flores Company from Spain on September 28, is a trip to nowhere through the concept of multiplicity. Inspired by music, dancers transform different dances and emotions, with flamenco as their important language.
Apart from the performances, there will also be promotions of new works, training class for dance production.
Master classes and workshops will be held throughout the festival.
Initiated in 2016 in Shanghai, “Dance Stages” aims to provide a stage for communication and exchange with contemporary dance programs worldwide. About 100 art troupes applied for the “Dance Stages” this time.
