What a performance! Poly theater turns 4
More than 1,180 performances, about 20,000 artists, more than 500 troupes from 24 countries and more than 800,000 patrons — these numbers show the achievements of the Shanghai Poly Grand Theater over the past four years.
To commemorate the milestone, the theater is offering an array of fresh performances from September to December for its recently announced 4th Anniversary Season.
The new season will feature 37 programs involving music, dance, drama and traditional Chinese opera and both locally and globally renowned artists.
A performance by the BBC Concert Orchestra will be one of highlights.
Led by leading British conductor Barry Wordsworth, the orchestra will play Mendelssohn’s “Hebrides Overture,” Tan Dun’s “Percussion Concerto the Tears of Nature” and two pieces composed by Jonny Greenwood and Modest Mussorgsky.
Li Yundi, a noted Chinese pianist, will wow music lovers as he will not only play the piano but also conduct the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra this time. Another Chinese pianist, Sun Yingdi, will play with the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Russia this month. The orchestra will be led by acclaimed Russian conductor, violinist and violist Yuri Bashmet.
The Philharmonie Salzburg, Vienna Boy Choir, Stradivari Quartet, Budapest Symphony and the Zhambyl National Symphony Orchestra of Kazakhstan will also perform.
Legendary modern dance choreographer Paul Taylor will land in Shanghai with his dance company in November. He will bring five stunning performances including two of his prominent works “Arden Court” and “Esplanade.”
Apart from modern dance, tango and ballet will also light up the stage of the Shanghai Poly Grand Theater.
A series of Chinese dramas will be staged, including the critically acclaimed “White Deer Plain”. Based on the Chinese literature classic of the same name, it depicts the hardships and spiritual pursuits of several generations living on the White Deer Plain in Shaanxi Province.
It will be performed in the Shaanxi dialect.
The theater is dedicated to offering citizens a rich cultural experience. Apart from introducing performances, it also holds free arts lectures and has established a children’s choir and a youth ballet group. The choir won the silver award in the 2017 World Peace Choral Festival in Vienna.
