Starring roles for city’s luxury hotels

From urban tales to romantic encounters, many stories in films and on TV are set in hotels, the place for meeting people and new adventures.

Here are some of the hotels in Shanghai having been featured on screen.

Hyatt on the Bund

With one of the best views of the legendary Bund and a prime site on the banks of the Huangpu River, Hyatt on the Bund is one of Shanghai’s most popular film locations.

More than 20 films and TV series have been filmed here, including Chinese romantic dramas “101 Proposals” and “Tiny Times” and British comedy “Hector and the Search for Happiness.”

The presidential suite of Hyatt on the Bund appeared in “Tiny Times” as the heroine’s luxury apartment, with its rotating LCD TV and marble bath.

The Vue Bar has also featured in various films. The stylish venue has a brick-lined, loft-style lounge furnished with bed-style sofas plus an enticing whirlpool on the terrace, commanding the best views of the Bund skyline.

A member of the Grand Hyatt portfolio, Hyatt on the Bund offers guests stylish restaurants, sophisticated comfort, and functional conference rooms equipped with advanced technological equipment.

Fairmont Peace Hotel

An Art Deco masterpiece brilliantly reinvented for the 21st century, the Fairmont Peace Hotel has been featured in a series of films as a classic city landmark that best represents Shanghai’s culture and flair, including scenes from “Temptress Moon” (1994), “Forever Enthralled” (2008), “Leaving Me, Loving You” (2004) and “The Silent War” (2012).

The hotel was widely known as the “No. 1 mansion in the Far East” and, for over eight decades, served as a glamorous playground for the elite.

With the Peace Hall restored to its original grandeur, guests can revive memories of old Shanghai cabarets and gala parties while stepping on the iconic sprung-wooden dance floor.

The hotel’s Jazz Bar takes guests back to the private clubs of the 1920s and 1930s with stunning performances from the Old Jazz Band, made up of six veteran musicians with an average age of 82. For decades, they have drawn an audience of locals, international travelers, celebrities and even heads of state such as former US presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan.

The hotel offers 270 distinctive guestrooms, including 39 luxury suites that combine Art Deco inspired furnishing with modern amenities.

The Chinese, Indian, English and American suites have been preserved from the original Peace Hotel, while the French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese and German suites have been redesigned in keeping with the original concept of highlighting national and historical styles.
