Handbag designer’s star keeps rising

A rising star in Shanghai’s design circle, Kris Xu has been on the cutting edge of making unique, conceptual handbags for many years. Her own handbag line, KrisXu, features structured handbags in unusual and often unexpected shapes with whimsical expressions and a free spirit behind them.
How did you enter the world of accessories in the first place and why did you pursue creation of bags?
I wanted to design garments at first. A friend suggested I start handbag design because she told me the competition in garments was too severe. But I thought I couldn’t express my understanding of beauty in handbags. One day, all of a sudden, I started to be passionate and could imagine how pleasant it would be to use my design ability to shape it into something beautiful.
How did you launch your line, KrisXu?
I have always loved beautiful things since I was a kid. I have a trading company and worked in trading for so many years, and I found, I did not enjoy that we always changed the nice designs and lowered the quality to lower prices to match the customers’ offers. I wanted to find a new career where I could express my understanding of the beauty, the beautiful world, and meanwhile, if what I do can bring positive energy to more people, I will be very very content. So that’s how I launched my line, KrisXu.
What is KrisXu known for and what makes your collection special?
Free design. I only design what I really love from my heart.
What trends in bag design do you foresee?
No boundary of countries, of sexuality, of race. And everything will be full of fun and love. This is the trend for everything, including bags. Unlike before, so many arts and design expressed negative thoughts and feelings. The world is changing and the new era is here.
