Exhibition showcases 3 decades of development

Shanghai Pudong Expo, also known as the Pudong exhibition hall, has become a mecca for visitors.
In November 2020, the year Pudong celebrated its 30th anniversary, an exhibition chronicling three decades of changes in the district opened at the venue.
It soon became one of the hottest exhibitions in town. By February this year, it had received over 300,000 visitors on site while over 1 million watched it online.
As one of the first visitors, Chinese President Xi Jinping said: “The achievements of Pudong over the past 30 years offer the most telling evidence of the strength of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and are a vivid demonstration of the country’s reform, opening-up, and socialist modernization.”
Pudong’s seismic changes also impressed Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni, who visited the exhibition in March 2021. “It’s really changed a lot,” he said after seeing replicas of the old and current Yincheng Road M., an epitome of Pudong’s development.
The road’s original name was Laiyidu, which sounds a lot like lannidu and means “muddy road.” It was, at the time, quite deserving of the moniker since people’s shoes were covered in mud during the rainy season. It is now a major thoroughfare in the heart of the busy Lujiazui financial district.
“With my warmest congratulations and great admiration,” the king wrote.
The exhibition showcases the history and accomplishments of the new area through more than 1,000 images, 33 movies, and five sizable installations.
Over 30 years, Pudong’s regional GDP has increased nearly 257 times, from 6 billion yuan (US$895 million) in 1990 to over 1.54 trillion yuan in 2021.
It accounts for nearly 1/8,000 of China’s total land area, but it contributes 1/80 of the country’s GDP and 1/15 of total imports and exports.
Pudong is now home to more than 35,000 foreign-funded firms, living up to its reputation as China’s gateway to the outside world.
By May, it had 398 regional headquarters run by multinational companies, which was almost 47 percent of the city’s total, and 256 R&D centers run by foreign companies, which was more than half of the city’s total.
