Doctors treat girl, 16, born with 3 nostrils
A 16-year-old girl who was born with three nostrils was successfully operated on at Shanghai No. 9 People’s Hospital, the hospital announced on Tuesday.
The operation also enabled her to breathe through her nose for the first time, as her nasal cavity was previously closed off from the rest of her respiratory tract.
The girl, who is from Chuxiong City of southwest China’s Yunnan Province, sought help in Shanghai under the recommendation of her hometown doctors who said that no doctor in Yunnan could help her.
The operation, which was performed on July 24, reduced her nostrils, opened up her nasal cavity, restored her nasal area and shaped a nose of normal dimensions, the hospital said.
The same operation also repaired her drooping right eye, which was also a birth defect.
Dai Chuanchang, the doctor who operated on her, said the girl will need further operations to refine her nose and eyes.
The hospital has exempted part of the operation’s cost, in light of the family’s financial situation.
