JCI certificate for center

EXPATRIATE children being treated at Shanghai Children's Medical Center are expected to have their medical bills covered by hundreds of foreign insurance companies in the near future as the hospital just earned accreditation for its international standard of medical care.

It is the first pediatric hospital in China to be accredited by Joint Commission International, a world leader in health care quality and patient safety.

So far 10 hospitals on China's mainland, including Shanghai Huashan Hospital, and 12 in Taiwan have received a JCI certificate.

"The endorsement means that our medical care and services are in line with international practices," said Dr Liu Jinfen, president of Shanghai Children's Medical Center. "This will attract more expatriate patients, some who previously went to Hong Kong or their home country for treatment due to doubts about our abilities and lack of insurance coverage."

"So far we are only recognized by 12 international insurance companies. The JCI certificate will help us attract more foreign patients and insurance companies," Liu said
