Specialists to spend more time in ‘ordinary’ clinics
TOP local medical specialists will spend more time at ordinary out-patient clinics to further convenience patients and reduce their medical burden, the local health authority announced yesterday.
Top specialists are required to give one half-day service at ordinary out-patient clinics after serving every two half-days at specialized clinics. Senior specialists, on the other hand, must serve in ordinary clinics for the same amount of time as they do in specialized clinics.
In Shanghai, top and senior medical specialists can serve in specialized clinics, which charge much higher than ordinary clinics, because of their level of experience.
In China, the fee to see a doctor is much lower than Western countries, which makes it difficult to fairly remunerate them for their experience and training.
Currently, the fee for an ordinary out-patient visit is 25 yuan (US$3.65) in local leading public hospitals. The cost for a senior specialist in ordinary clinics is 40 yuan, while top specialists can be seen for just 50 yuan.
In addition, a higher number of out-patient services with senior and top specialists will be offered to general physicians at neighborhood health centers, as the city’s government continues to encourage people to visit grassroots facilities for their first visits.
Those with complicated conditions will then be transferred to senior public hospitals.
