China holds fresh Taiwan military drills
CHINA’S military announced fresh drills yesterday in the seas and airspace around Taiwan Island.
China’s Eastern Theater Command said it would conduct joint drills focusing on anti-submarine and sea assault operations.
Foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said yesterday that China was conducting normal military exercises “in our own waters” in an open, transparent and professional way, adding that Taiwan was part of China.
When asked whether China’s ongoing drills abided by international law and whether new warnings for civilian air and sea traffic would be issued, Wang said relevant departments issued timely announcements in line with both domestic and international law.
The countermeasures China took in response to United States House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan region are justified and appropriate, Wu Qian, Ministry of National Defense spokesperson, said yesterday.
Wu made the remarks when responding to a media query regarding the countermeasures, including the cancelation of three exchange activities between the Chinese and US militaries.
The current tensions across the Taiwan Strait result solely from the provocations from the US side. Thus, it must take full responsibility and face the grave consequences.
Wu noted that the Chinese side had made clear its stern position regarding China-US relations, the relations between the two militaries and the Taiwan question, and had repeatedly lodged solemn representations regarding Pelosi’s Taiwan visit. However, the US side’s actions betrayed its commitments.
China’s countermeasures are necessary warnings to the US and Taiwan’s provocations and justified actions of safeguarding national sovereignty and security, and are reasonable and appropriate, he said.
Despite its claims of crisis management, the US side continues to create tensions and make excuses for its erroneous words and acts and provocative behaviors.
