Li’s hope for her yet-to-be born child

CHINA’S former tennis star Li Na said she doesn’t want her child to know who his or her parents are until the age of 16.

Li is going to give birth to her first child in a few months’ time. She described her unborn child as “the busiest baby in the world” who has been carried by the mother everywhere to attend all kinds of activities and ceremonies following Li’s retirement from tennis.

“I think the baby has already get used to all the exposure by now.

“I have reached an agreement with (husband) Jiang Shan that we are not going to tell our child what we do so as not to put too much pressure on him or her.”

Li said she would hide the Laureus trophy, as well as other trophies she has won over the years from the baby.

“Though I’m sure our child would be informed by other people of our identity, I still hope the secret can be kept until our child reaches the age of 16,” the two-time grand slam winner suggested.

The 33-year-old said that she didn’t expect 2014 to be the last year of her professional career.

“I loved my job, but my body couldn’t handle it anymore. I was so close to world No. 1, but had been badly bothered by injury,” the Wuhan native said.

Asked how “exceptional” she was from other athletes, Li said the Laureus Academy should have a clearer answer. “If they make me a member of the academy next time, I will be able to know their standard better,” she joked.

Three retired Chinese athletes — former National Basketball Association star Yao Ming, speedskater Yang Yang and gymnast Li Xiaopeng — were named new members of the Laureus Academy last night.
