Kids learn and play through AI robots

Artificial intelligence is increasingly used to help children with their studies as well as play with them in the form of robot “friends.”

At the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, domestic AI firm iFlytek showed off its AlphaEgg AI robot which teaches young children to learn Chinese, mathematics, and English via voice recognition. The cute egg-like robot can also play music, movies and educational games.

Children can also video chat with family members who are away from them through the robot’s “eyes,” basically its screen. When they are lonely, they can chat with the robot as well.

“It mainly provides voice interaction with the children,” said a female employee of iFlytek, surnamed Hu. “The young kids can ask questions and AlphaEgg can communicate with them by voice.”

Microsoft showed two products — Xiaoice and Xiaoying — which can help children’s early education and English learning. Xiaoice is a chat robot and the newer version tells stories to children aged from 3-9 years old. Xiaoying is a WeChat app which can stimulate different daily life scenes for users to learn English.
