Lavrov, Brahimi agree peace in Syria achievable only through dialogue

MOSCOW, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- The only way to end the ongoing violence in Syria lies in dialogue, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and the UN-Arab League joint envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi agreed in a phone conservation that "only an equal dialogue without any preconditions between Syrian sides would stop violence and launch a substantive discussion about the country's future."

On Friday, during a "2+2" meeting in Washington, the U.S. and Russian foreign and defense ministers agreed to host a peace conference on Syria in Geneva as soon as possible.

They also agreed on follow-up discussions over ways to help reduce the growing humanitarian crisis ensuing from Syria's conflict.

Last week, in the wake of renewed deadly terror attacks in Syria, Moscow accused the rebels of "taking out on vulnerable civilians" for their inferior military position.

According to local experts, the main obstacle for the conference to be convened soon is the constantly shifting military balance in the conflict-torn country.

"Geneva conference is a sort of labor sharing between Moscow and Washington in their joint efforts to coerce the sides in the Syrian conflict to start the peace talks, which can only be achieved by restoring military balance" Alexander Shumilin, an expert with the Russian Academy of Science, said at a recent round table discussion in Russia.

"Otherwise, each side will press forward anticipating military defeat of the other."

Russia and the United States may take a pause in their relations but not in the case of Syria because people die there in thousands, director of the Public Policy Research Center Vladimir Yevseev said.

Last Wednesday, Lavrov said the priority of the proposed conference on Syria must be re-targeting military efforts toward fighting terrorists.
