Russia, Iran expect resumption of nuclear talks soon

MOSCOW, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- Top diplomats from Russia and Iran expect fastest resumption of talks over Tehran's nuclear program, Russian Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

During a telephone conversation between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart Mohammad-Javad Zarif, the two sides "covered the situation concerning the Iranian nuclear program, emphasized the necessity of fastest resumption of talks in order to find efficient ways to resolve the existing issues," the ministry said in an online statement.

Earlier in the day, the ministry's spokesperson Alexander Lukashevich expressed hopes that Iran and the six world mediators could continue the dialogue shortly.

Iran's intention to take a "transparent and flexible approach" at the talks will be vital, said Lukashevich.

Meanwhile, Moscow lauded any of Iran's actions which will facilitate cooperation to search for mutually advantageous solutions to the problem, he added.

Both Iran's new government and the world powers have shown interest for resuming nuclear talks after the last round of negotiations held in Almaty, Kazakhstan in April failed to yield much practical results.

Earlier this week, an Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said the country is waiting for President Hassan Rouhani to appoint chief nuclear negotiator as the first step for the resumption of talks with the world powers.
