Indian troops fire along LoC, injuring 6 Pakistanis

ISLAMABAD, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Indian troops opened fire along the Line of Control (LoC) in the disputed Kashmir region, injuring six Pakistanis, officials said Friday.

Local media quoted the officials as saying that Indian troops violated the ceasefire in Kotli sector and fired rockets on Pakistani civilians.

They said women and children are among those injured in the fresh incident of shelling.

The latest incident occurred just days after Pakistani and Indian prime ministers agreed in New York last week to reduce tensions along the LoC, the de facto border between the uneasy neighbors.

Both countries declared ceasefire at the LoC in 2003 and guns had relatively been silent since then.

However, tensions have escalated following exchange of fire between troops of the two countries in January.

Both accuse each other of ceasefire violations.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh have agreed that Director Generals Military Operations will meet to find out solution to the LoC tension.

The Foreign Ministry in Islamabad said Thursday the military generals will meet. But it did not give any date.

Pakistan has denied a recent claim by Indian officials that a group of militants have entered into its part of Kashmir from the Pakistani side and the Indian forces have held them up along the LoC.

Pakistan army denied the claim, saying "no such thing happened at all."

"This is a blatant lie. We totally deny this baseless allegation," the army's Inter-Services Public Relations has said.
