Colombia anticipates Schengen visa exemption

BOGOTA, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- Colombian Foreign Minister Maria Angela Holguin has expressed confidence European visa requirements for the country's citizens may be removed soon.

She said Tuesday she expected the EU Council to approve the Schengen visa move thanks to an initiative promoted by Spain and supported by other European nations.

"When the European Parliament gathers next year, we might manage to get the approval of the Schengen visa exemption and thus increase tourism to Spain and other European countries," Holguin said in a statement.

She welcomed Spain's efforts, which would also see European visa requirements removed for citizens of Peru.
