One security personnel killed, 3 injured by rebels in NE. India

NEW DELHI, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- An Indian security personnel was killed and three others injured in an ambush by suspected rebels in the northeast Indian state of Manipur Saturday, said local media.

An Assam Rifles soldier was killed and three others were seriously injured when insurgents ambushed a paramilitary force party at Lambisa in Manipur's Ukhrul district on Saturday, said Press Trust of India.

Insurgents exploded a powerful bomb and opened fire at the road opening party of 44th Assam Rifles battalion, said the report.

Insurgents ambushed the security patrol minutes before the arrival of Bhratiya Janata Party BJP Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi to address a rally in Imphal, state capital of Manipur which borders Myanmar and Bangladesh.

The attack might be launched by local rebel group "United Revolutionary Front" which has called for boycotting Modi's election campaign rally.

The BJP leader is stepping into the restive northeast in its aggressive campaign for the general election to be held in April and May.

He is also due to address rally in Assam, the biggest northeast state of India next week.

People in India's northeast region are ethnically and culturally different from people of other parts of the country.

Some militant or separatist groups have been fighting for independence or autonomy of the region from New Delhi.
