Sweden's prestigious medical university to offer online courses

STOCKHOLM, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- Sweden's leading medical university Karolinska Institutet is going to offer online MOOCs (massive open online courses) to students worldwide, regardless of background or qualifications, said the university in a statement on Monday.

The move is intended to meet the global demand for high quality university education, said Jan-Olov Hoog, Dean of Higher Education at the university.

The new online courses are possible now through collaboration with the international non-profit education group edX.

Currently, the collaboration had expanded to include 31 universities around the world and the edX platform had more than 900,000 registered users.

Karolinska Institutet worked alongside a group of highly ranked universities such as Berkeley, Toronto University and McGill University.

Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities, which accounts for over 40 percent of the medical academic research conducted in Sweden and offers the country's broadest range of education in medicine and health sciences.
