Drought-plagued Californians to start climate march next month

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- A group of Californians is going to start a 3,000-mile (4,828-km) walking across the continental United States in order to raise awareness and action on climate change, and they are gaining more support.

The number of marchers signed up on-line reached 237 Thursday since the initiative was launched at the end of January. The marchers, who will complete part or whole distance of the trekking, are from six countries and 36 states, according to the website of "The Great March for Climate Action."

Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Koretz joined the group Wednesday, saying "These marchers are my heroes. When we take a cumulative look at all the extreme weather events going on around the world, including California's record-breaking drought, you know what I know: we have to do more to rapidly reduce our carbon dioxide emissions, and we have to do it."

The march will begin on March 1 with a rally at the Wilmington Waterfront Park on Los Angeles Harbor and followed by a 17.5-mile (28.2-km) march through the streets of Los Angeles. The marchers will walk about 14 miles (22.5-km) per day until they arrive in Washington D.C. on Nov. 1.

In the eight months, the marchers will reach some big cities including Phoenix, Denver, Des Moines, Chicago and Pittsburgh. They will camp in a mobile green village which will demonstrate a range of sustainable technologies, including a mobile wind generator, parabolic solar cookers, composting toilets and a truck powered by vegetable oil donated by companies.

Many marchers have spent more than six months preparing themselves, both physically and psychologically, for the rigors of marching day after day and camping in challenging conditions for 246 nights, the website said.

Ed Fallon, founder and director of the Climate March, said that "We'll let people see firsthand that addressing the climate crisis is not a technical problem but a personal and collective one. It' s a wake-up call for all of us to step forward and do our part."
