Malta to build Maritime Hub

VALLETTA, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Malta's Economy Minister Chris Cardona has said the Mediterranean country will build a Maritime Hub at a government seminar.

"For Malta the Mediterranean Sea is a tremendous resource which Malta needs to use to develop a blue economy, blue growth and blue jobs," the minister said during the "Economists Business Roundtable with the Government of Malta" on Friday.

"In the plans for the Maritime Hub, we're exploring the possibility of a Maritime Academy so that prospective seafarers acquire the necessary skills and training to get work in this sector, so that business gets the people they need and the Maltese get high quality jobs," he added.

During the conference, Cardona also emphasized that Malta has an incredibly stable economy.

"The Eurozone crisis was something we helped with, rather than suffered from", he said, "We have a growing economy with high rates of employment. We also have political stability, with a consensus across the board about the need to welcome business and help it prosper."

The tourism industry also showed an favorable momentum in the country. Known as a safe, sunny tourist destination for sun-starved Europeans, tourism remains a cornerstone of the archipelago's economy, contributing some 25 percent of GDP and attracting over 1.3 million visitors each year.

"The construction sector surges ahead and other sectors, niche and not so niche, are doing well - everything from life sciences to our aviation park." said Cardona.
