Myanmar gov't, ethnic armed groups agree on 1st draft nationwide ceasefire pact

YANGON, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar government and ethnic armed groups agreed on the first draft of a nationwide creasefire agreement here Tuesday.

Both sides agreed to the titles of the seven-chapter single text draft of nationwide ceasefire agreement to be presented for detailed further discussion in the next talks set for the first week of May.

The seven chapters comprises aim and objective, issues related to ceasefire, ways and means to be applied to consolidate the ceasefire, guarantee for entering into political talks and tasks to be continued for implementation.

The draft of the single text document was made at a meeting between the government's Central Peace Making Work Committee and the ethnic armed groups' National Ceasefire Coordination Team ( NCCT).

The meeting, which lasted for four days since last Saturday, was attended by 21 ethnic armed groups involving five non-NCCT- member ethnic armed groups such as the United Wa State Army (UWSA), the Restoration Council of the Shan State Army (RCSS), the National Democratic Alliance Army (NDAA), the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K), as well as the All Burma Students Democratic Front (ABSDF).

The talks also involved parliamentarians and military representatives.

If the signing of the single text draft nationwide ceasefire agreement is successful during next talks, Myanmar's six decade- long civil war is to come to an end and political dialogue would take its place to strive for peace in the country, observers here said.
