SCO holds security council secretaries meeting in Tajikistan

DUSHANBE, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Tajikistan on Thursday hosted the 9th meeting of security council secretaries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), at which participants discussed ways of strengthening security cooperation.

Representatives from SCO members, namely China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, discussed the security situation in adjacent regions, including the Middle East and North Africa.

As instability in such countries as Afghanistan and Syria would affect the security interests of SCO members, the participants called for continued measures within the framework of the organization to combat terrorism, separatism, extremism, drug-trafficking and transnational organized crime.

SCO members should enhance contacts with other international and regional groups to jointly counter those threats, they said.

During the meeting, the participants also listened to a report delivered by the executive committee of the SCO's Regional Counter-Terrorism Structure.

The SCO, an intergovernmental organization, was founded in China's Shanghai City in June 2001. Apart from the six members, it also has Afghanistan, India, Iran, Mongolia and Pakistan as its observer states, and Belarus, Turkey and Sri Lanka as dialogue partners.
