Cambodian deputy PM meets with two UN senior officials on ties

PHNOM PENH, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Hor Namhong on Tuesday met with two United Nations senior officials to discuss relations and cooperation between Cambodia and UN on social and economic development and human rights.

The two officials are Haoliang Xu, assistant to the UN secretary general and director of UNDP's Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific, and Flavia Pansieri, UN deputy high commissioner for Human Rights.

In the meeting, Hor Namhong said Cambodia and United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have forged good cooperation since 1994 and expressed profound thanks to UNDP for assisting Cambodia in five main sectors including economic development, health and education, gender equality, good governance, and social welfare.

For his part, Xu said UN would continue cooperation with Cambodia in social and economic development in order to ensure the country's inclusive and sustainable growth.

On the human rights issues, Flavia Pansieri recognized that Cambodia has made progress in many areas; however, some areas are still needed to be improved.

"Cambodia is like every country, there are positive aspects and areas that need to work more together," she told reporters after the meeting. "There is no country that cannot improve its human rights situation."

Both sides also discussed the current political situation in Cambodia after a disputed general election in July last year. Hor Namhong said the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) held a firm stance to negotiate and settle the dispute with the opposition party peacefully.

Political row between the Prime Minister Hun Sen's CPP and the Sam Rainsy's opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) has simmered since the July election results showed that the CPP won 68 parliamentary seats against 55 seats for the CNRP.

Claiming serious ballot-rigging, the CNRP refused to accept the outcome and has boycotted parliament and held numerous protests to demand an early election.
