Belarus president suggests postponing formation of Eurasian Economic Union

MINSK, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko suggested that the formation of the Eurasian Economic Union be postponed if the parties are not prepared to fully implement the agreements.

"Today we already have a range of issues on which the parties' opinions diverge, and the list of these issues is alarming," Lukashenko said at a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, which opened in Minsk on Tuesday.

The agenda of the meeting, chaired by Lukashenko, includes a review of the progress on the Eurasian Economic Union draft treaty preparation, as well as implementation of the action plan on Armenia's accession to the Customs Union and the Common Economic Space of Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia.

President Lukashenko is also going to hold bilateral meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev.

"There should not be any restrictions on the movement of goods between the members of the future union, no matter how sensitive they may be," said Lukashenko, adding long-term preservation of all forms of restrictions on the movement of goods creates an undesirable precedent.

Russian President Putin said that problems that have arisen between Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan during the preparation of an agreement on the Eurasian Economic Union can be solved. The agreement is scheduled to be signed in late May 2014.

According to Putin, the future agreement can improve the cooperation which will allow the parties to make the economies more competitive and effective, and to draw domestic and foreign investment.

"The huge market we have created - 170 million people - can acquire an absolutely new quality," Putin said.

For his part, Nazarbayev said "the remaining issues can find their solutions and we can come to terms with them."

"There are three or four issues to be settled, which is quite a feasible job," Nazarbayev said.
