Rahul Gandhi accepts responsibility for Congress' defeat in Indian polls

NEW DELHI, May 16 (Xinhua) -- India's Nehru-Gandhi scion Rahul Gandhi Friday accepted responsibility for the ruling Congress party's worst ever defeat in the general elections.

"The Congress has done pretty badly, a lot for us to think about. As vice president of the party, I hold myself responsible," Gandhi told reporters in the Indian capital.

The 43-year-old son of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi was the party's prime ministerial candidate, fighting against the main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s Narendra Modi in the general elections.

Congratulating the BJP on its landslide win, Sonia Gandhi said: "Win and loss are a part of democracy. We respect the decision."

However, she added: "We also hope that the new government won't compromise on the country's unity."

Though the final results are not yet officially announced, the BJP has won an absolute majority in the 543-member Lower House of Parliament, and thus can form the next government on its own.
