At least 15 killed in DR Congo shipwreck

KINSHASA, June 21 (Xinhua) -- At least 15 people drowned on Saturday when a ferry capsized on Lake Kivu in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, local authorities said.

Four women and eight children were among the dead, the authorities said, adding that over 30 people were rescued.

The tragedy happened when the vessel with an unknown number of passengers aboard was sailing between Idjwi island and Goma, a city in North Kivu province.

Bad weather and high winds were linked to the accident.

Ferry mishaps occur frequently in the country due to poor maintenance and overloading.
