Ministries form vocational education development plan

BEIJING, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Six Chinese ministerial-level departments have jointly produced a plan to develop vocational education over the next six years.

By the end of 2015 a vocational education system should be in its initial form. The number of students at vocational high schools should reach 22.5 million, with 13.9 million at vocational colleges, said the plan posted on the Ministry of Education (MOE)'s website late on Monday.

The document was jointly issued by the MOE and five other departments including the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Finance.

The plan pledged reforms in curriculum design in vocational schools and a regional coordination system to streamline school courses.

With China's urbanization drive in mind, vocational education and training for migrant workers and their children as well as for urbanites who need jobs should be emphasized in the development, the document said.

It also urged equal opportunities for vocational college graduates in the job market.

By 2020, a modern vocational education system should be fully in place with world-class standards that fits Chinese society and is deeply integrated with industrial development, it said.

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday urged the nation to strengthen efforts to develop vocational education, saying it is an important part of both the national educational system and developing a skilled labor force.

Premier Li Keqiang also called for efforts to speed up the cultivation of skilled technical workers to boost the economy and employment.
