Greek Epidaurus festival kicks off with new talents

ATHENS, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The 60th Epidaurus Festival kicked off on Saturday with an aim to bring a breath of fresh air and optimism to the Greek and foreign audience.

The festival, dedicated to ancient Greek drama, opened with Euripides' Helen directed by 26-year-old Greek Dimitris Karantzas who works with a group of young actors.

"I am very excited regarding this collaboration with a cast of young actors. If you don't find understanding and complicity, there is no point to the work of a director," Karantzas said during a press conference shortly before the opening.

Along with Karantzas, young director Ektoras Ligizos also made his debut at Epidaurus Theater with Aeschylus' Prometheus Bound on July 12.

The ancient Greek theater in Epidaurus, situated within the archaeological site of the Sanctuary of Asclepius, in the Argolis prefecture of the Peloponnese, has a capacity of seating 10,000 people and hosts the festival from July to August each Saturday.

For the first time in the festival's history, performances at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus are presented with English subtitles, making it easier for foreigners and tourists to understand the mystic atmosphere of the ancient Greek drama.
