Syrian rocket fired at Israeli Golan Heights

JERUSALEM, July 14 (Xinhua) -- A rocket fired from Syria hit an open area on the Israeli side of the Golan Heights on Monday afternoon, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Spokesperson Unit confirmed in a statement.

The statement said according to initial reports, the launching was "deliberate." It is still not clear who is responsible for the attack, the Walla news website reported.

Late Sunday hours, another mortar shell fired from Syria landed in the Golan Heights on Israeli side. The IDF retaliated with anti- tank artillery, the website reported. No injuries were reported in either incident.

It is still not clear whether the mortar fire on Sunday was intentional or whether it was stray fire from the civil war raging in Syria.

A month ago, Israeli jets hit nine targets in Syria after anti- tank missile from Syria killed an Israeli teenager and injured two others.

On Saturday, the Israeli military confirmed that two rockets were fired from Lebanon hit open fields near Nahariya. No injuries or damages were reported.

In the meantime, more than 80 rockets were launched into Israel from the Gaza Strip on Monday, the seventh day of Israel's Operation Protective Edge offensive. A total of 17 were intercepted by the Iron Dome anti-missile system, according to the IDF's statistics.

In the past week, the Israeli military attacked more than 1,500 targets in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip enclave. According to Palestinian health officials, 172 people have been killed since the operation began, including women, children, the elderly, and disabled, while 1,270 people have been reported wounded.

Israel embarked on its deadly operation following nearly 300 rockets launched to southern Israel throughout the weeks leading up to the offensive.

The barrages were launched as Israel conducted another operation in Hebron last month, in the aftermath of the kidnapping and killing of three Israeli teens, who Israel believes are were murdered by Palestinian militants associated with Hamas in Hebron.

Tensions rose further in the region after Israeli nationalists abducted, tortured, and killed a Palestinian teenager in what many suspect was a reprisal attack for the murder of the Israeli teens.
