Vietnam to compete in 21 sports at 17th Asian Games

HANOI, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam will compete in 21 sports at the 17th Asian Games to be held from Sept. 19 in Incheon, South Korea, according to Vietnam' s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on Tuesday.

The ministry said on its website that the country will send 199 athletes to the event, including 97 males and 102 females.

Vietnam will take part in events of athletics, swimming, gymnastics, shooting, karate, taekwondo, boxing, wrestling, and weightlifting among others, with a target to grasp two to three gold medals, said the ministry.

At the 16th Asian Games held in China in 2010, Vietnam joined in 27 out of 42 sport events and won one gold medal in karate.

The 17th Asian Games will be held in South Korea from Sept. 19 to Oct. 4 with 36 sport events, including 28 Olympic sports.
