3 Italian nuns killed in Burundi: Italian foreign ministry

ROME, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Italian foreign ministry on Monday confirmed media reports that three Italian nuns have been killed in Burundi.

"I was deeply saddened to hear of the killing of Sister Lucia Pulici and Sister Olga Raschietti in their convent in Kamenge," Italian Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini said in a statement. The name of the third victim has not been released yet.

Mogherini said the Italian government was waiting for the authorities in Burundi to clarify what happened. "We will do everything in our power to bring the bodies of the two nuns home to Italy as soon as possible", she added.

According to religious sources quoted by media reports, the nuns may have been killed during a robbery attempt. The details of the tragic event were still unclear.

The minister conveyed her condolences to the families of the victims and to the Xaverian Missionary Sisters of Mary, the religious order to which they belonged.

The three nuns had dedicated their whole lives to helping "alleviate the all too great suffering that still exists in the African continent," Mogherini highlighted.
