Kenya to destroy illicit small arms, light weapons: official

NAIROBI, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Kenya is in the process of destroying over 5,000 illicit small arms and light weapons that have been recovered, a senior cabinet official said on Wednesday.

Kenyan Cabinet Secretary for Interior Joseph Ole Lenku said the number of arms awaiting destruction will join 25,000 other firearms that have already been collected and destroyed over the years.

"Kenya's commitment to finding solutions to the problems associated with violence has been consistent. It is our conviction that we must prevent conflict, protect human life and promote human development," Lenku said.

The CS made the remarks during the opening of the Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Review Conference on the Geneva Declaration on Armed Violence and Development in Nairobi.

The two-day symposium brings together representatives from across the sub-Saharan region to work on solutions to the regional and global problems associated with armed violence and development.
