Date, venue set for 2015 Asian Basketball Championships in China

BEIJING, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- 2015 Asian Men's Basketball Championship will run from Sept. 23 to Oct. 3 in Changsha, provincial capital of central China's Hunan province, as their women's version will feature at the end of August in Wuhan, Hubei.

Hu Jiashi, deputy director of Chinese basketball's governing body, told Xinhua on Thursday, "We have got an approval from FIBA Asia for the tournament's date and venue."

China got the nod for hosting 2015 Asian Men's and Women's Basketball Championship on FIBA Asia Central Board Assembly on July 25, while the date and venue was yet to be decided upon then.

As a qualification for 2016 Rio Olympics, 2015 Asian Men's and Women's Basketball Championships will see only their respective titleholder qualify for the next Olympics automatically.

Since its debut in 1975, the Chinese men's basketball team has been crowned for 15 times. In 2011, they beat Jordan to claim the title, and the ticket to 2012 London Olympics.

However, things began to change for the former Asian basketball giant, as the men's team saw the worst record of featuring on the tournament over the last 38 years with the fifth position. In Incheon Asian Games, they finished fifth, also their worst.

In Asian Games, Chinese basketball girls recorded a relatively comfortable runner-up with the team B. The team A, who particiapted in 2014 Women's World Basketball Championship, got the sixth place in Turkey.
