Sudan hails suspension of ICC probe into Darfur file

KHARTOUM, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir on Saturday said the decision of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to freeze the file of alleged war crimes in Darfur is a victory for the will of the Sudanese people, who refused to hand over any Sudanese official to ICC.

Earlier on Friday, the ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda told the UN Security Council that she was discontinuing her investigations in Darfur because of a lack of initiative by the council.

The prosecutor's suspension of the investigation into the Darfur file is attributed to the Sudanese people's stance rejecting humiliation and subjugation, Al-Bashir said.

Al-Bashir's statement was Sudan's first official reaction towards the ICC decision.

In 2009, the ICC issued an arrest warrant against al-Bashir for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Sudan's Darfur region.

Khartoum then rejected the ICC decision and refused to refer any Sudanese official to the ICC.
