Mekong River Commission Council calls for assistance from development partners

HANOI, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- The 21st meeting of the Council for Mekong River Commission (MRC) opened here on Thursday, calling for assistance from its development partners for activities of the MRC during 2016-2020 period.

The meeting drew participation of water and environment ministers of Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam as well as over 20 delegations of MRC's strategic partners including upstream countries, donors, international organizations and observers.

At the two-day meeting, MRC Council discusses management and financial matters, internal rules governing the MRC governing bodies and the progress to study on sustainable management and development of the Mekong River including impacts by mainstream hydropower projects, reported Vietnam's state-run news agency VNA.

Every year, MRC Council convenes for mutual conclusion on the management and development of water and related resources of the Lower Mekong Basin within the framework of the 1995 Mekong Agreement, according to the MRC on its website.
