UN to support DR Congo army in fighting rebels

KINSHASA, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Mission for Stabilization of Congo (MONUSCO) will continue supporting the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) army in tracking down FDLR rebels, head of the mission Martin Kobler said Tuesday.

"I was in Beni before the DR Congo army launched operations against the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda rebels (FDLR)," Kobler said, adding that "rebel fighters were currently not visible on the ground."

He said the operation was spearheaded by the DR Congo army, but it was supported by MONUSCO in terms of strategy, planing and logistics.

On Jan. 29, DR Congo army launched a military operation in Beni dubbed "Sokola 2" to disarm the FDLR rebels.

The International Conference for the Great Lakes Region and the Southern African Development Community had already given the rebels an ultimatum to disarm voluntarily. The ultimatum ended on Jan. 2, 2015.
