Vietnam's biggest city to offer sightseeing electric cars

HO CHI MINH CITY, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Early next month, ten 12- seater electric cars will start operating as buses, taking passengers to nearly 30 places of interests in Ho Chi Minh City's downtown areas, the municipal Transport Department announced Wednesday.

Electric cars are scheduled to run from 8 am to 6 pm on a daily basis, with a departure interval of 10 minutes, according to the Department's proposal submitted to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee.

The fare is 6,000 VND (roughly 0.3 U.S. dollars) if passengers travel no more than half of the route, and 10,000 VND (nearly 0.5 U.S. dollars) for more than half of the route.

Besides, passengers can buy other kinds of tickets to get on or get off cars within certain hours or for the whole day. Tickets will be available at the September 23 Park, Saigon Zoological and Botanical Garden, on electric cars and at tourism companies.

The number of electric cars in service will be adjusted to actual demands, the Transport Department said. Ho Chi Minh City is expected to welcome 4.7 million foreign visitors this year, compared with merely 180,000 in 1990, according to the municipal Tourism Department.
