Central African Republic's elections might be postponed : UN envoy

LIBREVILLE, May 20 (Xinhua) -- The Central African Republic (CAR)'s elections scheduled to take place this August might be postponed, the special representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in the CAR said on Tuesday.

Abdoulaye Bathily was speaking during a ceremony in the Gabonese capital Libreville to present the final document of recently concluded peace talks in the CAR to ambassadors and representatives of international organizations in Gabon.

He said parties in the CAR that attended a recent forum in Bangui noted the impossibility of holding elections in August, and recommended the extension of the transition so that conditions for organizing free and fair elections could be created.

The forum held between May 4 to 11 in the CAR's capital, brought together 700 participants representing different parties in the country before the mediator of the Economic Community of Central African States, Republic of Congo President Denis Sassou N'Guesso.

The forum's recommendations, he said, also included creation of a mechanism for peace and reconciliation, and a commission of inquiry to examine cases of serious human rights violations.

Bathily also urged the international community to make more efforts towards the CAR's national reconciliation.
