3 militants killed, trooper wounded in Indian-controlled Kashmir gunfight

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Three militants were killed and an Indian military trooper wounded in a fierce gunfight in Indian-controlled Kashmir early Sunday, officials said.

The gunfight, according to the Indian military, broke out at Zachaldara in Handwara sector of frontier Kupwara district, about 85 km northwest of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian- controlled Kashmir.

"Three militants have been killed in an overnight gunfight inside the forest area of Zachaldara in Handwara sector," Col. Manish Kumar, a Srinagar-based Indian military spokesman, told Xinhua. "A trooper was also wounded fighting these militants but he was removed to hospital immediately and his condition is stable now."

According to the spokesman, the gunfight began Saturday evening and continued until Sunday morning.

The identity and group affiliation of slain militants was not known immediately. Reports said an Indian military captain was also wounded in the gunfight.

"Social media and some news websites are saying so but we are yet to get confirmation on this," Kumar said, adding that a search operation was still underway.

A guerrilla war has been going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. Gunfight between the two sides takes place intermittently across the region.
