2 dead, 20 injured in bus-truck collision in Ukraine

KIEV, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- At least two people were killed and 20 others injured when a bus and a truck collided in Ukraine's southern Nikolaev region, authorities said Tuesday.

The accident occurred at 8:55 p.m. local time (1755 GMT) Monday, when the truck crashed into the passenger bus in Nikolaev city, causing the bus to overturn, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry said two bus passengers died at the scene and the injured were taken to hospital, with two of them in critical condition.

Preliminary investigation suggested that the truck driver, who escaped after the accident, was speeding and lost control of his vehicle. Further investigation is under way.

In the first half of 2015, more than 59,800 road accidents occurred in Ukraine, down 27.5 percent year-on-year, causing 1,579 people to die. Careless driving, speeding, driver fatigue and poor road conditions are the main causes of these accidents.
