Nigerian troops kill 100 Boko Haram militants in gun battle: official

LAGOS, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Nigerian troops killed at least 100 suspected Boko Haram militants Wednesday during a fierce gun battle in northeastern Nigeria, an official said.

The fleeing Boko Haram terrorists were gunned down during a futile ambush on 120 Task Force Battalion troops in Goniri of Yobe state, Col. Sani Kukasheka Usman, a military spokesperson, said in a statement.

The Nigerian troops successfully repelled the attack and killed all of the terrorists, he said.

"On the last count over 100 terrorists bodies were seen early today (Wednesday)," he added, saying seven soldiers lost their lives while nine others were wounded in the battle.

The troops seized large quantities of arms, ammunition and other equipment from the terrorists, Usman said.

Boko Haram, a local insurgent group seeking an end to Western education, has allegedly killed more than 13,000 people and abducted hundreds since it started its operations in 2009.
