Singapore consumers surveyed on gift-spending

SINGAPOREANS will spend the bulk of their Christmas budget on family and loved ones, and more than half of them plan to give friends a Christmas gift, a consumer spending survey said today.

The survey made last week by Singapore-based United Overseas Bank interviewed 500 people aged 25 to 55 with a monthly income of at least S$2,500 (US$2,051) and found 51 percent of respondents planned to give friends a gift, followed by children and colleagues. Only 26 percent planned to give gifts to their parents.

The respondents said they intend to spend S$500 on a gift for themselves, S$400 for their significant other, and S$188 for parents.

Only one in ten are looking to increase their gift budget this year and they are generally younger and more affluent. The average amount spent on gifts this year is S$580, said the report.
