Top firms on hand as WAIC kicks off today
The World Artificial Intelligence Conference will kick off today in Shanghai, with more than 500 companies and agencies participating in the event on the theme of “Intelligent World, Indivisible Community.”
The conference covers a wide range of exhibitors from home and abroad, including tech giants, such as Microsoft, Amazon, Alibaba, Tencent, Huawei and JD, leading auto manufacturer SAIC, the three telecom operators in China and AI unicorn companies like SenseTime and Cloudwalk.
ZTE, Huawei and other leading tech companies will also highlight new infrastructure in combination with fifth generation technology.
The conference will pay close attention to AI chip innovation, 5G, intelligent management of data, AI applications in law enforcement, financing, unmanned driving, education, healthcare and blockchain.
The WAIC is an opportunity for Shanghai to showcase how new technologies can fight epidemics and develop the digital economy, according to organizers, including the Shanghai government.
As one of the three “pilot industries” in Shanghai with strategic innovation, AI has been used in medical imaging, smart chips and autonomous driving, said Wu Jincheng, director of the Shanghai Commission of Economy and Informatization.
Shanghai is a nationwide AI development center. In 2019, it had 1,100 AI firms with an annual output of around 140 billion yuan (US$19.96 billion), according to the commission.
More than 500 AI experts and executives, including Nobel laureates and Turning Award winners, will attend the conference.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, most speeches and events will be held online.
