Air bag defect sparks recall of 24,021 GM cars
SHANGHAI General Motors, the joint venture between Chinese carmaker SAIC and GM, will recall more than 24,000 cars imported to the Chinese mainland over an air bag defect, China’s national quality watchdog said yesterday.
The cars are being recalled as the problem may prevent side air bags for the front seats and seat belt pretensioners from deploying properly, and causing a warning light for the air bag on the dashboard to turn on, the company said in a report filed to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.
The recall, initiated yesterday, covers 24,021 Buick Enclave sport-utility vehicles from the model years of 2008 to 2013 and made between August 15, 2008 and September 21, 2012. The affected SUVs are part of the company’s global recall of 1.2 million cars over the same air bag defect.
Shanghai General Motors initiated the largest vehicle recall of 1.5 million units over a faulty fuel pump bracket in China in December.
