BYD builds solar power plant in Shaanxi

CHINA'S figurehead in renewable energy, BYD Co, which is 10 percent owned by billionaire investor Warren Buffett, will build a 500-megawatt photovoltaic plant in Yulin, Shaanxi Province, the company said in a press release today.
Under a contract signed between BYD and the government of Yulin early this week, the plant will be developed in three phases. The first phase will be completed by the end of next year and will have a capacity of 200 megawatts.
When the third phase is built, the solar power plant will be able to generate over 700 million kilowatt hours per year and cut carbon dioxide emissions by 750,000 tons, compared with the method of coal-fired generation.
The project, its investment not yet disclosed, is BYD's latest move to rev up its new energy business from solar power to batteries and electric cars.
The Shenzhen, Guangdong Province-based company said last month it will ship 110 megawatts of solar modules – 458,000 in total – to South Africa for two projects developed under the country's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Program.
